Ohashiwa nanzen goriyodesuka?

Continuation of “Atatamemasuka?

When you buy multiple lunch boxes or cup noodles at a convenience store, A store clerk will ask you “Ohashiwa nanzen goriyodesuka?” This is Japanese for “How many chopsticks do you need?” In other words, it means “How many people use it?” Or “How many times do you want to eat?” Because, generally chopsticks and forks are not attached to convenience store lunch boxes and cup noodle package in Japan.

Chopstick、箸

In addition, “Zen” is the end of the word when expressing the number of chopsticks, similar to the expression “one person” “two peaces” “three blocks” in English.

Therefore, When a clerk asks you ‘Ohashiwa nanzen…?’ please answer the number. Exemplary answers are “Ichi zen(一膳)”, “Ni zen(二膳)” and “San zen(三膳)”, but you can make it well with “Hitotsu(一つ)” or “一個(一個)”. Of course it is okay with your finger’s signature. Or numbers can be communicated in English.

When it is unnecessary, let’s answer “Irimasen”. The clerk did not give chopsticks, but when you want it, say “Please give me chopsticks.”

Atatamemasuka?

Also in Japan, There are many convenience stores. Moreover the number of stores and service levels are far better in Japan than in the Philippines.

The convenience store is usually called “Konbini(コンビニ)” in Japan.

Well, When you try to buy a boxed lunch or a prepared dish you will be asked in Japanese as ” Atatamemasuka?” This means “Do you want this warmed up in a microwave?” Therefore please answer by “hai(はい=Yes)” or “iie(いいえ=No).”

Also, you are not asked by a clerk, but when you want to warm it up say “Atatamete kudasai(温めてください)”.

Tamagokake Gohan

Tamagokake Gohan is a favorite of many Japanese. It’s inexpensive, quick to eat, and high nutritional value.

Just put all the contents of the egg in warm rice and put soy sauce. We mix it with chopsticks and eat. Oh, It is better to mix egg using another bowl and put it in rice.

Tamagokake-Gohanm、卵かけご飯I heard that it is not common to eat raw eggs except for Japan. However, for many Japanese people feel that ballot is very grotesque.

Seafood Noodle

I heard that many Filipinos love Nissin Seafood Noodle. There was a murder incident occurred about it in the past. When I gave it to Filipino staffs of my familiar diving service as a souvenir, they were pleased.

Nissin CUP NOODLE SEAFOOD シーフードヌードル

Well, it is such a seafood noodle, but it is hard to find a ramen shop serve it. More often, curry noodles are rare in the city. They are what Nissin developed for cup noodles.

Therefore, the closest thing to seafood noodles is Nagasaki Champon. You can eat Nagasaki Champon with Ringer Hut etc.

Sinigang

I’m used to the taste of Sinigang because I have been to the Philippines many times. But Japanese who have never been to the Philippines may be surprised. They think that taste of that sour soup “is this damaged?” Because there is no Japanese food using Tamarindo.

But  Let’s serve it to a Japanese friend, you could enjoy their reaction.

Ramen

Ramen is originally Chinese cuisine. But it developed independently in Japan. Now it became one of the representative of Japanese foods.

There are various kinds of ramen for each ingredient of soup. Perhaps, the most popular among Filipinos is ‘Tonkotsu Ramen.’ Anyway, pork is popular in the Philippines.

Ikkousha Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen、一幸舎の博多豚骨ラーメン

Tonkotsu means pig bones. The soup is made by boiling pig bones for a long time. It is light brown and has a deep taste.

Depending on the ramen shop, the soup has a unique smell, and there are many people love it, but some people deny it.

By the way, the home of Tonkotsu Ramen is Fukuoka prefecture. And there are many Tonkotsu Ramen shops there. A Filipino ESL teacher who is assigned to Fukuoka Prefecture may be happy.

Sara Udon

Sara Udon  is a famous dish of Nagasaki lining up with Champon.

Sara Udon

Although the word “udon” is contained in the name, it is not a kind of udon, but uses thinly deep-fried Chinese style noodles.

There is no soup in the Sara Udon, put the fried noodles on the dish, eat it with fried vegetables, fish paste, shrimp、cloud ear mushroom and starchy sauce. My recommendation is to wait for a few minutes and eat fried noodles after softening them. Let’s put a Worcester sauce or mustard  with your choice.

The Sara Udon is healthy with plenty of vegetables, It has a distinctive taste different from any of the other Japanese noodle such as ramen, udon, soba, Champon etc.

You can eat Sara Udon in Ringer Hut as well as Champon.

Balut

BalotThere is no custom to eating balut in Japan. Most Japanese can not to eat balut. Because They feel balut is so grotesque.

Therefore, it is hard to obtain fertile egg of ducks. A limited imported food store sells it but it is not freshly boiled.

Please enjoy balut when you return home.

Karaoke

Karaoke is originating in Japan. However, not everyone sings.

And the place to sing is limited a karaoke studio, pub, or home, not the roadside.

Moreover, karaoke in Japan is a little expensive leisure. In many karaoke studios, we need to pay entrance fee per hour and order something to drink. After that it is all you can sing until time limit. There are also many Philippine songs.

But karaoke service is also evolving. There is a karaoke service that can be absorbed alone was appear. It’s called ‘Hitori Karaoke’.

Champon

Don’t you think Champon is a Korean cuisine? Certainly Korean-made Champon is sold at the super market in the Philippines. There might also be TV commercials about it.

But, Champon is traditional Japanese food. The birthplace is Nagasaki where famous for A-bomb survivors.  “Champon” is Japanese meaning “Mixture.” It is common to have thick noodles, mixed chicken roe soup and pork soup, plenty of fried vegetables, fish paste, cloud ear mushroom and so on.

Nagasaki Champon. The meat like Adobo pork is also Nagasaki cuisine.

In recent years, Koreans adjusted it to Korean style and sold it. Therefore Korean Champon is pretty spicy, but the original Champon is a dish featuring sweetness of vegetables.

You can enjoy the Champon in a restaurant chain named Ringer Hut in Japan.
