Peaceful state

Japan is proud of a peaceful state. This is because Japan abandoned the invasion to other countries after the end of the Pacific War in 1945. And Japan is not actively involved in the wars of other countries. Fortunately, Japan did not become a battleground or attacked from other countries.

However, in recent years, the SDF(Self Defense Force) has gone to conflict areas of abroad and do backwards support of allies. And there is a sign that North Korea will attack Japan.

I would like to continue peace forever.

Ohashiwa nanzen goriyodesuka?

Continuation of “Atatamemasuka?

When you buy multiple lunch boxes or cup noodles at a convenience store, A store clerk will ask you “Ohashiwa nanzen goriyodesuka?” This is Japanese for “How many chopsticks do you need?” In other words, it means “How many people use it?” Or “How many times do you want to eat?” Because, generally chopsticks and forks are not attached to convenience store lunch boxes and cup noodle package in Japan.

Chopstickã€ç®¸

In addition, “Zen” is the end of the word when expressing the number of chopsticks, similar to the expression “one person” “two peaces” “three blocks” in English.

Therefore, When a clerk asks you ‘Ohashiwa nanzen…?’ please answer the number. Exemplary answers are “Ichi zen(一膳)”, “Ni zen(二膳)” and “San zen(三膳)”, but you can make it well with “Hitotsu(一ã¤ï¼‰” or “一個(一個)”. Of course it is okay with your finger’s signature. Or numbers can be communicated in English.

When it is unnecessary, let’s answer “Irimasen”. The clerk did not give chopsticks, but when you want it, say “Please give me chopsticks.”

Atatamemasuka?

Also in Japan, There are many convenience stores. Moreover the number of stores and service levels are far better in Japan than in the Philippines.

The convenience store is usually called “Konbini(コンビニ)” in Japan.

Well, When you try to buy a boxed lunch or a prepared dish you will be asked in Japanese as ” Atatamemasuka?” This means “Do you want this warmed up in a microwave?” Therefore please answer by “hai(ã¯ã„=Yes)†or “iie(ã„ã„ãˆ=No).â€

Also, you are not asked by a clerk, but when you want to warm it up say “Atatamete kudasai(温ã‚ã¦ãã ã•ã„)”.

Mt. Fuji will erupt

Mt. Fuji in Japan is famous worldwide, but few people know this beautiful mountain is a volcano.

富士山

Mt. Fuji has repeated eruptions at an interval of about 100 years since ancient times. But it has not erupted for about 300 years.

Therefore, next time, it will erupt with energy three times stronger than last time. However, it may not erupt forever. But conversely, it may erupt tomorrow. It is unpredictable.

In Addition, Depending on the size of the eruption and the direction of the wind, volcanic ash accumulates, making daily life difficult. There is a high possibility that the larger damage on the east side of Mt. Fuji due to the air current.

Earthquakes

Japan is a country with many earthquakes. If we include a weak shake, earthquakes are occurring somewhere everyday. This is because Japan is on the boundary of the following four plates from a geological.

  • North American Plate
  • Eurasian Plate
  • Pacific Plate
  • Philippine Plate

However, do not worry. Many buildings in Japan are made of earthquake resistant construction. But some old buildings do not conform to the new building standards. So be careful when the strong earthquake occers. Especially wooden houses may cause fire due to earthquake.

In ancient Japan, people believed catfish occur an earthquake. It was a strange superstition.

Earthquakes are rare in the Philippines, and make people fuss. But Japanese do not panic with a walkable earthquake. we are used to it.

Because of that, when a big earthquake occur someday, Many Japanese may be sacrificed without evacuating immediately. But almost Filipinos may be evacuated immediately and saved.

By the way, it is unpredictable by current science technology when and where earthquakes occur.

Traffic on the left

When you first came to Japan, you might be surprised that the car is running on the left side of the road. This is British style. Although Japan has never been a British colony, it was strongly influenced by the UK on modernization that began about 150 years ago.

The car runs on the left side in Japan.

Also, the old samurai had a rule to walk on the left side of the road. Because they had a sword on the left side of the body. Therefore, it was necessary to avoid hitting each other’s sword when passing each other. Perhaps this custom was adopted for car traffic.

Mentality of Japanese

Many Japanese are more pessimistic than the Filipino. There are several reasons. Of course, this is just a general theory. It’s depends on the individuals.

Perfect thinking

Many Japanese are perfect thinking. Therefore, in school education, it was important to not mistake the answer to a question for a long time.

However, no one is perfect in the world. A handful of excellent people will behave without fail but others will make a mistake and regret it.

Japan makes high quality products. That is the result of working perfectly oriented of Japanese. But sometimes it works for the worse. In that case the high demands imposed on them hurt themselves.

Family unity is weak

Compared to the Filipino, the unity of Japanese families is weak.

Also In Japan, family consisting of three generations were common in the past. But now it is a minority. It is the result of economic development, population has moved to urban areas, nuclear families have increased.

Japanese tended to give priority to work rather than family in the past.

However, people who does not supported by their families is fragile in mental.

Geographical reasons

In tropical island countries, seafoods and fruits are easily obtained. And if they lost a house to live, they will not die soon. But it is different in cold areas.

Now, Japan has become rich but In the past, laziness came directly to death in the past. Even though people are diligent, if the climate worsened they faced to fear of starve to death. Therefore a careful personality or a pessimistic way of thinking was the key to survival.

I hear that many Filipino people use lots of salary without thinking afterwards. It is possible only people who live in a tropical country and have strong unity in their families.

Religion

I heard that there are overwhelmingly more Christians in the Philippines except for Mindanao island. On the other hand, in Japan the majority are Buddhists. However, the religious mind of many people is mild. They are conscious of their own religion only during rituals such as funerals.

There are devout Cristian also in Japan, but it is a few percent. About 400 years ago, many missionaries came to Japan and worked hard in their mission, but there were not much results. One of the reasons is that the regime banned Christianity at the time. They feared that European countries will colonize Japan using Christianity.

Other reason may be from the thought of animism from ancient times.Ancient Japanese people were thinking that God would stay in all things. It is called “god of eight million(八百万ã®ç¥žï¼šYaoyorozu no kami).” Perhaps it may be close to the expression “nature is a complex god” sensuously.

For example, The monster named Godzilla was born as a symbol of antithesis against nuclear weapons development competition or counterattack by the great nature, during the Cold War. Thus, its name starts with “God.”

The animation movie “Princess Mononoke” is also based on a similar background. Or it may be symbolized by characters of Dragon Ball. Many characters called God appeared in that manga. Unfortunately, I do not know if it is the same in English version though.

Also, the Emperor was worshiped as a god, before the end of the Pacific War. By the way, the emperor’s ancestor is the main character in Japanese mythology.

However, Japanese like to enjoy events in other countries and religions with original arrange. For example, Christmas has penetrated as “a day when lovers should spend a romantic time”, rather than spending time with their families, or “as a day to eat cakes and chicken”. In addition, Halloween is positioned as “a day when adults and children disguise themselves and they go downtown.”
