Sumo is an individual competition, but it is also a group battle.
All sumo wrestlers belong to a group called “Sumo-beya（相撲部屋）”. There are currently 45 sumo-beya, each of various sizes. Wrestlers belonging to the same sumo-beya do not confront each other at the tournament.
Therefore, the wrestlers in the sumo-beya to which the Yokozuna belongs will be more advantageous than the wrestlers in the sumo-beya without the Yokozuna.
The ranking of the top 42 wrestlers including the Yokozuna and Sanyaku are called “Makuuchi”. And 28 wrestlers who following it is called “Juryou”.
70 wrestlers who ranked upper than Juryou are given the status of “Sekitori”. They are allowed traditional hairstyles called “Ooicyou（大銀杏）”. A salary will be paid to them by the Sumo Association. Of course, the higher ranker gets high salary.
Below Juryou is the rank of the undercard called “Makushita”. No salary will be paid to the Makushita wrestlers.
The next rank of the Yokozuna is Ozeki. A wrestler who can constantly win more than 10 days will be promoted to Ozeki. Unlike the Yokozuna, Ozeki is demoted when he could not won enough in last 2 tournaments.
The next rank of Ozeki is Sekiwake, And the next rank of Sekiwake is Komusubi. They are not particularly qualified, but they are the title given to the best-ranked skillful.
Ozeki, Sekiwake, Komusubi are collectively called “Sanyaku（三役）”. In other words, they are Yokozuna reserve forces. There are also no limit of the number for Sanyaku. However, few wrestlers can promoted to these ranks.
There is a ranking system in professional sumo. The title of the top ranker is Yokozuna. When Ozeki (title of the second ranker) ranked wrestler won in the last 2 tournaments, he can be promoted to the Yokozuna. Conversely, Yokozuna who regretted his achievement in the last 2 tournament, he is forced to retire.
Yokozuna is not limited to one person, sometimes there are several yokozuna at one time. In Kyushu tournament of November 2017, four people, Hakuhou（白鵬）, Harumafuji（日馬富士）, Kakuryu（鶴竜） and Kisenosato（稀勢の里） were the yokozuna.
Also, high dignity is required for the Yokozuna. Therefore, if the Yokozuna causes a scandal he will be forced to retire, even if his grades are good. Harumafuji retired after this year’s Kyushu tournament, because he caused a problem hurting the young wrestler during drinking.
Sumo Tournament is held in odd month. The place of holding is January, May, September in Tokyo, March in Osaka, July in Nagoya, November in Fukuoka.
One tournament begins on Sunday and there are matches everyday for 15 days until Sunday the following week. So it is a good result if some wrestler win more than 8 victories.
Since it is 15 days every other month, there will be matches once a day for 90 days a year.
Also, when there is no tournament, they will also perform in the rural areas. That is a hard schedule.
Generally, powerful and clumsy wrestlers frequently use “Tsuki-Oshi-zumo（突き押し相撲）”. It is an attack by both hands palm.
On the other hand, wrestlers who with high skill prefer the technique “Nage（投げ）”. It is an attack that grabs the oppornent’s belt and topple over.
If there is a gap in size, the smaller wrestler aims for superiority with agile movement. If a small wrestler is moved next to or behind the opponent, he can push a big opponent out easily.
Most matches will be finalized within 30 seconds. Many matches end in less than one second.
Conversely, if the power of both competes and the match goes over 2 minutes, it is called “O-zumo（大相撲）” and the venue gets excited.
However, If both wrestlers do not move after scrum, the match is temporarily suspended. After a short break, it will resume from the original position.
Sumo match rules are simple. The conditions of victory are as follows.
In the sumo rule, kicks, elbow strikes, punchs by fist are violation. But, attacks by palms is OK.
Beginning the match will be decided by both crouching wrestlers after the signal by the referee called “Gyouji（行事）” . When two wrestlers who stand up at the same time, the match starts. It is redo if timing deviates.
